Group raise $1M to pressure Sen. Susan Collins to vote against Brett Kavanaugh, report says

A crowdfunding campaign has raised over $1 million as of Tuesday for the opponent of Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, if she votes to confirm Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court, a move she likened to bribery.

One group hopes to influence Susan Collins’ vote with a small fortune in campaign contributions to her next political opponent whoever they’ll be.

Two political action committees primarily based in Susan Collins’ home state, the Maine People’s Alliance and Mainers for responsible Leadership, have joined forces with progressive activist Ady Barkan to crowdfund in support of the senator’s Democratic opponent in 2020, despite the Maine Democratic primary not being scheduled for roughly twenty one months.

As of this writing, the campaign has raised a surprising $1,014,940, with each greenback earmarked for Susan Collins’ ultimate Democratic opponent if Collins fails, within the words of the campaign, “to rise up for the people of Maine and for Americans across the country” by balloting against Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Collins known as it an attempt at extortion in a response through a interpreter, according to The Washington Post.

“And anybody who thinks these ways would work on senator Susan Collins clearly doesn’t know her,” spokeswoman Annie Clark said in a statement. “Senator Collins can compose her mind supported the merits of the nomination. Threats or alternative attempts to bully her won’t play a factor in her decision making some.”

An ethics professional told The reporter that “it could very well violate federal bribery statutes.”

But Jordan Libowitz, a interpreter for the voters for Ethics and Responsibilities, told the reporter it doesn’t rise to the level of bribery, “because there’s no agreement.”

“It’s simply the method cash and politics tend to figure of late,” he said.

Meanwhile, supporter Julie B endorsed the campaign, saying “women can stand along to protect our rights and what’s right.”

“The individuals of ME ar asking you to be a hero, legislator Susan Collins,” the campaign wrote. “… to square up for the people of ME and for Americans across the country, each dollar given to this campaign can visit your eventual Democratic opponent in 2020. we’ll get you out of office.”
